Museo Pietro Micca: Turin’s Underground Military History

Museo Pietro Micca links the story of Turin’s 1706 siege with the underground tunnels beneath the city. Here’s what to know about visits, access and getting there.

What Museo Pietro Micca Commemorates

Museo Civico Pietro Micca e dell’Assedio di Torino del 1706 focuses on two connected subjects: the siege of Turin in 1706 and the life of Pietro Micca. The museum building connects directly to the underground tunnel system, bringing the city’s military history into the space where its defensive galleries can be explored.

The museum takes its name from Pietro Micca, whose story is part of its account of the siege. Its underground setting gives the visit a close connection to the military engineering behind Turin’s defenses.

The Siege of Turin and the Mine Galleries

The museum’s staircase associated with Pietro Micca was uncovered on October 1, 1958, by Captain Guido Amoretti, who founded the museum and became its first director. The discovery helped connect the museum’s historical focus with the surviving subterranean structures.

The museum’s listed sites extend beyond its galleries. They include the museum and the Citadel countermine galleries, the Rivellino degli Invalidi, Forte del Pastiss and the Cisternone. Access differs by site, so check which parts are available before planning a longer visit.

What Visitors Can See

You can visit the museum rooms without a reservation. The countermine galleries are a separate guided visit, with advance booking required and a limit of 15 people per group. Free accompanied-visit times are listed at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with an additional 3:30 p.m. visit on Sundays. The complete visit takes about 90 minutes.

Free audio guides are available in Italian, Spanish, English, French and German. The museum rooms have a maximum permitted occupancy of 50 people.

The underground routes are not accessible to people with mobility difficulties. The museum says you can still complete the experience using its M.I.C.C.A. virtual-visit system. Tunnels are narrow and may not suit visitors with claustrophobia. Wear clothing suitable for a humid environment and shoes that can handle uneven, potentially wet ground.

Tickets, Tours and Access

Standard admission is €5, with reduced admission at €3. Reduced categories include visitors over 65, visitors aged 10–18, university students under 26 with student identification, and groups of 15–30 who book in advance.

Children under 10 and holders of Abbonamento Musei, Torino+Piemonte Card or ICOM cards are among those listed for free admission; check the museum’s information page for the full list and conditions.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays. Special holiday openings and closures apply, and the museum says variations may occur. Check the official site before you go.
